TIPS ON HOW TO HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER

It used to be that wedding planner were considered a luxury for the rich and/or celebrities. Could not be farther from the truth. If you are recently engaged, or even a month after your wedding and need a little help, here is a sensible, intelligent and real guide to find that special person who can take you down the aisle to your other special person with style. These are the quick and crucial points you need NOW:

1) Talk to friends, suppliers and look at the blogs and sites you trust. Ask your recommendations. Schedule meetings with at least three highly-examined consultants/planners after reviewing their websites and viewing their work. Come armed with questions and use this as your guide. More than anything, follow your instinct and see who you click with. These consultations must be by appointment and, of course, free!

2) First question: do you like your style (of manners, humor, dress, organization)? Does it make you smile/feel calm? If so, it is a good sign that you will be a great team. Remember, a wedding planner is part of the budget guru, part organizational ninja, part shrink, part consultant style and part family therapist. He or she (and your team) will be your sanity, your laughter, your breathing and your guidance. Choose wisely!

3) How long have you been in the business? How many weddings have you executed? If the answer is "I planned my own wedding and it was VERY fun" or, the same thing, "I planned my daughter's wedding and it was very satisfying!" then run. These are called amateurs and there are hundreds of them disguised as experienced professionals. Taking a class in wedding planning does not make a wedding planner, either. You want to make sure that your planner has made at least 50 weddings. A good golden rule is also at least three years in the business. Do they have any lawsuits filed against them? Bad signal. Do they receive a lot of local and national press? GREAT sign.

4) Do they have a variety of ways to plan, such as full service (best for most brides), weekends and hourly? Are they accessible during most business hours and some after hours? Do not abuse him and call at 3 am in a state of panic, but expect them to respond immediately when you have problems. The planners live on their smartphones, so also the text and the email. They are super organized!

5) If they charge extra for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, it is a red flag. The great wedding planners will also take care of that and the brunch the next day. Your ideal planner can even offer you a package for your honeymoon and make sure a car takes you to the airport. Soup with nuts is the reason why you pay a premium for excellence! If you opt for a more abbreviated planning experience, expect also great attention and excellence. "Day off" is never really "Day of": your planner should start meeting with you a few weeks before and know your wedding like the back of your hand, review contracts, draw timelines, list providers and keep up to date. the site for the big event, configuration, breakdown and other parts.
